Omdia: Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max is the world’s best-selling phone in the first half of 2024

According to Omdia’s “Smartphone Model Market Tracking Report—Q2 24,” the iPhone 15 Pro Max was the largest smartphone shipped globally in the first half of 2024, with a total shipment of 21.8 million units. This is the second year in a row that the iPhone Pro Max series has won the top spot, following the iPhone 14 Pro Max being the best-selling phone in 2023.

So far, the standard iPhone 15 is second only to the 15 Pro Max in shipments at 17.8 million units in 2024, while the iPhone 15 Pro is in fourth place with 16.9 million units. However, the iPhone 15 Plus is the less popular model in the series, with only 3.7 million units, ranking 28th globally.

With the latest iPhone hitting the market on September 20, this trend is expected to continue, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max likely to be the most popular model, according to the report. This trend will continue despite the significant upgrades of the standard 16 and 16 Plus compared to their predecessors. Both models will feature the latest A18 chipset – a complete skip on the previously used A16 chipset A17 – allowing them to power the upcoming “Apple Intelligence” AI feature.

The third phone is the Samsung Galaxy A15, with 17.3 million units shipped in the first half of 24. Priced at $129 (currently around ₹ 14,999), the 4G phone is by far the most popular low-end smartphone, up from the Samsung Galaxy A14, which shipped 12.4 million units in the first half of 2023. Meanwhile, the 5G version of the phone, the Samsung Galaxy A15 5G, priced at $199 (currently about ₹ 15,200 in India), came in seventh with 12.2 million units sold.

The new Samsung S24 Ultra, released on January 31, is the fifth most popular smartphone with 12.6 million units sold. This surpasses its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which shipped 9.6 million units in the first half of 2023. The success of the latest S24 series may be due to Samsung’s first introduction of the Galaxy AI feature, which may attract previous S-series users to upgrade.

The three-year-old iPhone 13 is in sixth place with 12.5 million units shipped, 1.4 million units more than the ninth-ranked iPhone 14. The iPhone 13 will cost around $599 ( in India, around ₹ 49,900) and could be a new starting point for many mid-range phone users to enter Apple’s ecosystem. Before that, this position was filled by the iPhone 11.

Finally, in eighth and tenth place are ultra-low-end phones, such as the Xiaomi 13C and Samsung Galaxy A05, priced at around $80. Both phones are very similar: both are 4G, have the same screen resolution, have entry-level 4GB of RAM, have rear cameras with 50 million pixels and 2 million pixels, respectively, and have a battery capacity of 5000mAh.

Omdia predicts that shipments will grow significantly in the first half of 2024 but will decline in the second half.
