Samsung Electronics’ PCIe 5.0 PC SSD PM9E1 is in mass production with a sequential read of 14.5 GB/s

Samsung Electronics Korea announced today that it has started the mass production of a new generation of PCIe 5.0 PC SSD PM9E1.

The PM9E1 is equipped with Samsung’s eighth-generation V-NAND flash memory and self-developed 5nm controller, and is available in four capacities: 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB.

The PM9E1 achieves a maximum sequential read rate of 14.5GB/s and a sequential write rate of 13GB/s, which is more than twice that of its predecessor, the PM9A1a, and significantly better than products such as the 990 EVO, which only supports PCIe 5.0×2.

Samsung’s PM9E1 also delivers over 50% improvement in power efficiency, improving mobile device battery life for on-device AI applications. It also supports SPDM v1.2 security technology to help prevent supply chain attacks against data.

Samsung Electronics plans to ship SSD products to PC manufacturers around the world starting with PM9E1, and expects to launch consumer products based on the PCIe 5.0 specification in the future.

Yongcheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Storage Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, said:

Our PM9E1 integrates a 5nm master to deliver industry-leading efficiency and maximum performance, which has been proven by our key partners. In the era of rapid development of on-device AI, Samsung’s PM9E1 will provide a solid foundation for customers around the world to effectively plan their AI portfolios.
